HEC's oldest labour leader Rana Sangram Singh passes away | News India

Ranchi, 06 September (HS). Rana Sangram Singh, the oldest labour leader of HEC and well-known national senior secretary of INTUC, died on Saturday. He was 96 years old. He was ill for a long time. Rana Sangram Singh's body has been kept in the mortuary of Paras Hospital. His last rites will be performed on Sunday at 11 am at Sithio Muktidham in Dhurva. The funeral procession will be taken out from the union leader's residence in Dhurva to Muktidham at 10 am.

Hatia Project Workers Union Joint General Secretary Liladhar Singh expressed grief over the death of Rana Sangram Singh. He said that with the death of Rana Sangram Singh an era of labour movement has come to an end. He said that his last wish was to revive HEC once again.

Rana Sangram Singh was born in Basantpur near Mohania in Kaimur district. Singh started his career as a rural development officer in Thakur village of Ranchi in 1956. He joined HEC in 1960. After this, in 1962, he was elected Vice President in Hatia Project Workers Union (union recognized by HEC). In the year 1969, Rana Sangram Singh was elected General Secretary of Hatia Project Workers Union. He made a total of 80 agreements, big and small, for HEC employees. These include the famous tripartite agreement of 1971. Employees of all categories benefited from this agreement. Rana Sangram Singh also got HEC revived twice. Once from BIFR and second time from Jharkhand High Court.

Apart from HEC, Rana Saheb was the president of Basal Patratu, SBL Ranchi, SNL Ranchi, Marine Diesel Engine Plant Ranchi and Indian Explosive Employees Union Gomia. Apart from this, he was also the president of Bihar Pradesh Congress Labor Cell and Jharkhand Pradesh Congress Labor Cell as well as Senior Vice President of Jharkhand Pradesh Congress Committee. He has also worked as National Senior Secretary of INTUC, Executive President of Jharkhand Pradesh INTUC and Executive President of Indian National Metal Workers Federation. He settled displaced Muslims affected by the riots of 1967. Indira Gandhi personally congratulated him by sending a congratulatory message for this noble work. Rana Sangram Singh had a good hold in politics. Big people like Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, Narasimha Rao, Dr. Jagannath Mishra, Bindeshwari Dubey, Chandrashekhar Singh, Shibu Soren knew him personally.
