The southwest monsoon is likely to start in Kerala anytime. The Indian Meteorological Department has predicted that the sea temperature is getting colder. Due to this, there is a possibility of El Nino conditions arising in the month of June. It is likely to change into La Nina in July. Due to this, there is a possibility of heavy rains in many parts of the country from July to September.
IMD Director General Mrityunjay Mohapatra has said that monsoon rain is affected by many factors including monsoon low pressure system. In which La Nina is prominent.
More than normal rainfall can be expected due to La Nina. This year, due to La Nina conditions, there may be more rain during August and September.
According to the IMD, the southern peninsula and central India are expected to receive above normal rainfall between June and September. While northwest India will receive normal rainfall, eastern and northeastern India will receive below average rainfall.
Earlier, the IMD had said in April that except eastern and northeastern India, the rest of the country would receive normal or above average rainfall.
From a meteorological point of view, La Nina is considered favourable for the Indian monsoon. Purna scientist Roxy Mathew Kole said that La Nina usually indicates the possibility of a rainy season.
