MUMBAI: Thane and Palghar districts received heavy rains for the first time over the weekend after rainfall subsided, resulting in waterlogging, disruption of rail and road traffic and five-kilometre-long queues of vehicles on the Mumbai-Nashik highway. However, water crisis concerns have eased to some extent due to good inflow of water in various dams and reservoirs in Palghar-Thane district.
Titwala in Thane district received the highest rainfall of 11 inches. More than four inches of rain in Thane city flooded the Masunda lake. Hundreds of Thane residents thronged to see the overflowing lake on Sunday. Various villages in Thane district recorded rainfall ranging from four inches to 11 inches. Trees were uprooted at some places, kutcha houses collapsed and many families had to spend the night awake as water entered houses in low-lying areas.
In the powerloom city of Bhiwandi, rain intensified after Saturday evening and it continued to rain throughout the night. As a result, low-lying areas including Kalyannaka, Patelnagar, Devjinagar, Bhaji Market and Teen Batti were flooded. The Old Bhiwandi-Thane road was flooded with so much water that vehicular traffic was halted for a few hours.
