Kolkata, August 30 (HS). During a rally organized by the 'Chhatra Samaj' organization of West Bengal, Kolkata Police arrested Sayan Lahiri, a prominent leader of the organization. Sayan approached the Calcutta High Court challenging his arrest. The case was heard on Friday, in which the court postponed the decision.
During the hearing in the High Court, Sayan Lahiri's lawyer claimed that Sayan had not attacked anyone and the police could not provide any concrete evidence of his arrest. The state said that Sayan's rally was organized without police permission and this rally led to violence. On this basis, the state government justified Sayan's arrest.
During the hearing, a question was also raised before Justice Amrita Sinha that when the rally organiser Sayan Lahiri was arrested, why was the former principal of R.G. Kar Hospital, Sandeep Ghosh, not arrested, whose name has come up in a similar case of anarchy. The judge asked the state government that if the rally organiser can be arrested, then why was Sandeep Ghosh, who is responsible for the R.G. Kar Hospital incident, not arrested?
It is worth noting that after the R.G. Kar Hospital incident, a movement was started against Sandeep Ghosh and serious allegations were leveled against him. Due to these allegations, he had to resign from his post. Since then, the CBI is continuously questioning him.
During the hearing, Sayan Lahiri's lawyer said that his client is accused of tearing the Trinamool Congress flex. He raised the question whether the police is protecting the property of a political party? Three FIRs have been registered against Sayan.
The state government told the court that no permission was taken from the police for the rally organised by Sion and violence took place during the rally. In support of this, the state also presented some photographs of the disturbance during the rally to the court.
The High Court has reserved the decision after hearing the arguments of both the parties and it is expected that the court may give its decision on this matter on Friday.
