AAP-Congress filed petition in Supreme Court regarding Chandigarh Mayor elections
Hearing was held in the Supreme Court today on the petition filed by Aam Aadmi Party and Congress regarding the election of Mayor of Chandigarh. Both the parties alleged rigging in the mayor election and presented the viral video of the election officer in the Supreme Court as evidence, after which CJI DY Chandrachud became angry with the election officer. Today in court he admitted that he had marked the cross on the ballot paper.
Returning officer confessed
The bench asked Returning Officer Anil Masih, who appeared in the Supreme Court today, whether he had cross marked the ballot paper or not. Anil Masih, who was the returning officer, confessed that he did this after the Aam Aadmi Party mayoral candidate arrived and ran away with the ballot paper.
What happened before this?
Three councilors of Aam Aadmi Party have joined Bharatiya Janata Party. Aam Aadmi Party councilors Neha Musawat, Gurucharan Kala and Poonam Devi have now joined BJP. After which the entire number of mayor elections has changed. Now BJP has absolute majority for the mayor elections. Mayor Manoj Sonkar has resigned from the post before the hearing in the Supreme Court. In fact, the Supreme Court had already banned the election process.
What happened on January 30?
Elections were held in Chandigarh Municipal Corporation on January 30, at that time BJP had 14 councilors. BJP was the largest party in terms of numbers. After this, Aam Aadmi Party had 13 MLAs and Congress had 7 MLAs. Apart from this, one councilor belongs to Shiromani Akali Dal. MP from Chandigarh also cast his vote. The mayor's election was contested jointly by AAP and Congress. According to this, AAP should have become the mayor, but BJP, which got 16 votes, became the mayor by canceling the 8 votes of AAP and Congress. After this AAP and Congress filed a petition in the Supreme Court. A video of Anil Masih, the presiding officer of the mayor elections, also went viral on social media, in which he was seen using a pen on the ballot paper. This video was presented as evidence in the Supreme Court by AAP and Congress.
SC reprimanded the returning officer
Chandigarh Mayor's election was held on January 30. The Supreme Court, while hearing the petition of Congress and AAP on alleged rigging, stayed the entire election process and directed to seal the ballot papers. Chief Justice DY Chandrachud reprimanded Mayor election returning officer Anil Masih and said, 'It is clear from the CCTV footage that he (presiding officer) spoiled the ballot papers. Action should be taken against them. This is a mockery of democracy. We are surprised that democracy is being murdered.
Elections were to be held on January 18
The mayor's election in Chandigarh was earlier to be held on January 18, but Anil Masih reportedly fell ill. Due to which the elections had to be postponed. Later, on the orders of Punjab-Haryana High Court, the date of elections was fixed on January 30. The election was also monitored through CCTV but the election was allegedly rigged. Aam Aadmi Party and Congress demanded canceling the elections and holding the mayor elections again.
