According to a recent study published in the journal Lancet Global Health, almost half of the adult population in India, i.e. 49.4%, is not physically active. What is worrying is that this figure has more than doubled compared to the year 2000, when it was only 22.3%. The study also found that women are more physically inactive than men.
People are not able to spare even 15-20 minutes daily for fitness
According to the World Health Organisation(WHO), To be physically active, adults should do at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity activities or 75 minutes of vigorous activities a week. But people in India are not able to take out even that much time for their fitness.
What can be the consequences of a passive lifestyle
Indians are more likely to develop non-communicable diseases such as heart disease and diabetes at least a decade earlier than others due to a sedentary lifestyle. Lack of physical activity means you are increasing your existing risk factors.
Ways to avoid the disease
You don't have to go to the gym or exercise for hours. Use the stairs and avoid the elevator. Walk to the bus stop or ride a bicycle. Even these small changes are beneficial. Choose activities you like for exercise such as dance classes, or swimming. If you have been away from exercise for a long time or have any health problems, consult your doctor before starting any new exercise.
