In the list of rare blood groups in the world, there is also a blood group which is known by the name of the state of India. We are talking about Bombay blood group, also known as “H-group”. Bombay blood group is an important discovery in the history of Indian medical science and it was first identified in 1952 in a hospital in Mumbai (old name Bombay). Hence it was also named Bombay.

What is special about Bombay blood group?

Generally, blood groups are identified based on the ABO and RH systems. Common blood groups include A, B, AB and O, which are based on the ABO system. These blood groups are identified based on antigens and antibodies. But Bombay blood group does not have the H antigen. The absence of the H-group makes the Bombay blood group different from other blood groups.

Even people with O blood group cannot donate blood

Normal blood group contains H antigen, which is necessary for the formation of A and B antigens. Due to lack of H antigen in Bombay blood group, A, B and AB type antigens are not developed. Due to this, a person with O blood group cannot donate blood to a person with Bombay blood group.

 

 

1 in 10,000 people have blood group 'H'

Bombay blood group is extremely rare worldwide. People with this blood group are mostly found in India, Pakistan, Japan and some other South Asian countries. In India, this blood group is found in approximately 1 in 10,000 people.

It is difficult to save lives by donating blood

Due to its rarity, it is not easy to get this blood. But this blood group has another specialty due to which it is difficult to save people's lives with this type of blood. The self life of this blood is only 35-40 days. Due to which it is very difficult to get blood on time.
