Berlin, 22 February. Bayern Munich and head coach Thomas Tuchel have mutually agreed to part ways in June, the club confirmed via its official website on Wednesday.
Although Tuchel's contract was due to expire in June 2025, following amicable talks between Tuchel and Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Driessen the two parties agreed to part ways a year ahead of schedule.
After two consecutive league defeats, Bayern currently sit second in the Bundesliga, eight points behind leaders Bayer Leverkusen, and lost the UEFA Champions League round of 16 first leg to Lazio 1-0 last week. . At the beginning of the season, the club suffered an embarrassing defeat in the German Cup at the hands of lower league team Saarbrucken.
“In an open and good dialogue, we reached the decision to mutually end our cooperation in the summer,” Driessen said in an official statement released by the club. Our aim is to carry out a restructuring with a new coach for the 2024/25 season. “Until then, everyone at the club has been clearly asked to achieve the maximum possible in the Champions League and the Bundesliga.”
He further said, “I obviously hold the team responsible. “Especially in the Champions League, we are confident that after the defeat in the first leg in Lazio, we will advance to the quarter-finals with our fans in the second leg at the Allianz Arena.”
The 50-year-old former Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain coach Tuchel replaces Julian Nagelsmann as Bayern coach in March 2023. Two months later, they dramatically won the Bundesliga title after Borussia Dortmund could only draw against Mainz on the final day.
“We have agreed that we will end our cooperation after this season,” Tuchel said. Until then, I will definitely continue to do everything I can with my coaching team to achieve maximum success.”
Bayern will face RB Leipzig and Freiburg in their next two Bundesliga matches.
