In the Sandeshkhali violence case of West Bengal, the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday, in an important order, ordered the CBI to form a special team (SIT) to investigate the entire case. The court said in its order that the investigation team will investigate all types of allegations by the women in Sandeshkhali, including rape, sexual harassment, land grabbing and extortion of money. High Court Chief Justice T.S. A bench of Justice Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmoy Bhattacharya gave this order taking cognizance of the petitions regarding the crime committed in Sandeshkhali and handing over its investigation from the local police to the CBI. West Bengal Police has already arrested the main accused, former TMC leader Sheikh Shahjahan and two TMC-run district council members – Uttam Sardar and Shibu Hazra, but locals were demanding that the investigation be handed over to the CBI. The court said that the investigation into the attack on ED officers in Sandeshkhali on January 5 will now be under the supervision of the court.
In the order, the court gave several instructions to the CBI and the state government and said that all the officers of the state should cooperate with the CBI in the investigation. Street lights and security cameras should be immediately visible in Sandeshkhali. The complaints include over 100 affidavits filed by victims of sexual harassment. According to one of them, she was repeatedly raped for 13 days.
