Amidst monsoon and changing weather, infectious diseases have increased the concern of the health system in the national capital Delhi. According to official data released by the Health Department of Delhi Government, 138 new confirmed cases of H1N1 swine flu have been reported in the last 24 hours. With this, the total number of swine flu cases in Delhi this year has increased from 2,308 to 2,446.
At the same time, the total number of infections of influenza-A category has been recorded at 3,177. This sudden increase in the number of patients in OPD with symptoms of cold, high fever, sore throat and difficulty in breathing has put the administration on alert mode.
Health Minister called emergency review meeting: Hospitals received strict instructions
Seeing the seriousness of the situation, Delhi Health Minister Dr. Pankaj Kumar Singh held a high-level virtual review meeting with top officials of the health department, medical directors and medical superintendents of government hospitals. Clear instructions were given in the meeting that no patient should suffer due to lack of treatment or investigation.

Arrangement of isolation beds: At least 5 isolation beds should be compulsorily reserved in all small and medium government hospitals of Delhi. At the same time, in big hospitals (like LNJP, GTB, DDU), 10 or more beds will be reserved at all times for influenza and other infectious diseases.

Dedicated Flu Corner: Special ‘Flu Corners’ should be set up in the emergency departments of hospitals, where senior resident doctors should be deployed so that suspected patients can be screened immediately.

24×7 Medical Staff: Orders have been given to ensure round-the-clock availability by preparing shift-wise duty roster of doctors, nurses and paramedical staff.
Orders to keep adequate buffer stock of medicines and testing kits
The health department has asked all hospital administrations to maintain adequate stock of viral transport medium (VTM), respiratory swab collection kits and RT-PCR testing resources. Hospitals have been instructed to immediately procure antiviral medicines and essential life-saving medicines locally, so that there is no disruption in the supply chain.
Keeping children, pregnant women and the elderly in high-risk category, doctors have been instructed to give special priority in the examination and treatment of patients of these categories.
Delhi Medical Association (DMA) issued public health advisory
To prevent the spread of the infection, Delhi Medical Association (DMA) and Indian Medical Association (IMA) have issued detailed guidelines for the general public:

Use of mask: Wear an N95 or three-ply mask while visiting crowded markets, public vehicles (metro/bus) and hospitals.

Respiratory Hygiene: Cover your mouth and nose with a handkerchief or tissue when coughing or sneezing and throw the used tissue in a covered dustbin.

Hand Hygiene: Wash hands with soap and water several times a day or use alcohol-based sanitizer. Do not touch eyes, nose or face without washing hands.

Avoid self-medication: Do not take antibiotics or antiviral medicines on your own if flu-like symptoms appear. Take medicines only on the advice of a registered medical practitioner.
No need to panic, situation completely under control: Administration
The Health Minister appealed to the public and said that there is no need to be afraid or panic about the situation. Most of the patients coming to the hospital are showing mild symptoms and are recovering completely within 2 to 3 days with normal care and timely treatment.
Arrangements for free testing and medicines have been made in all hospitals, primary health centers and Ayushman Arogya Mandirs of the Delhi government. The Health Department is monitoring the situation every day so that any possibility of an epidemic can be prevented in time.
