When people in the US see the Indian community doing very well there, they look at them and form their opinion about India, Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar has said.
Addressing a programme organised here, he said that with the end of the Cold War, the H-1B visa has played an important role in strengthening India-US relations. When the first Prime Minister of independent India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, went to America for the first time, there were three thousand people of Indian origin in America. After this, when Indira Gandhi went to America for the first time as Prime Minister, there were 30 thousand people of Indian origin there. When Rajiv Gandhi went to America for the first time as Prime Minister, there were three lakh people of Indian origin there and when Prime Minister Narendra Modi went to America for the first time, this figure has increased to 33 lakh. People of Indian origin in America have made their place in the society there on the basis of their hard work, skill and talent.
Jaishankar said that when people in the US see the Indian community doing so well there, they form their own views about India. This is why the traveling Indian community has been so important to us. Geopolitical circumstances and the Cold War have played a role in India-US relations since then, but the Indian tourist community has also played an equally positive role in strengthening the relationship between the two countries. The H-1B visa is a non-immigrant visa, usually given to skilled workers coming to work in the United States. US companies use the H-1B visa the most to hire skilled workers from around the world and most Indians go to the US under this visa. Jaishankar also said that the traveling Indian community can also play an important role in establishing digital connectivity between India and the US.
The times to come are going to be very challenging
Regarding the geopolitical situation in the world and the growing tensions around the world, Jaishankar said that we are going through difficult times and if we talk about the next five years, then this time can be even more difficult. Looking at what is happening in West Asia, Ukraine, South-East Asia and East Asia and the post-Corona situation, the economic crisis facing the world, environmental issues, the times to come will be very challenging.
Many countries are struggling
The Foreign Minister said that many countries are facing the kind of economic challenges we are seeing in the world. Trade is becoming difficult, there is a shortage of foreign currency. He also expressed concern over the Gaza war and the increasing robberies of commercial ships in the Red Sea by Iran-backed Houthi rebels and said that these incidents are having devastating consequences globally.
What was said about the American elections?
Regarding the presidential election in the US, he said that we do not comment on the elections of other countries but on the basis of the bilateral relations of the last 20 years, whatever decision the American people take, we are confident that we will work shoulder to shoulder with the US President.
