Gwalior: “Jal Ganga Samvardhan” campaign started in the district from World Environment Day

Gwalior, June 05 (HS). To save water, the work of renovation and revival of water structures started in every village and town of the district on Wednesday under the “Jal Ganga Sanvardhan” campaign from World Environment Day. Along with this, preparations for planting trees on a large scale for environmental protection also started simultaneously. Horticulture and Food Processing Minister Narayan Singh Kushwaha participated in the cleaning and renovation work of Mehrab Sahab Ki Talaiya located in Gol Pahadiya area and Energy Minister Pradyuman Singh Tomar participated in the cleaning and renovation work of Sagartal. These works are being given concrete shape with the participation of public cooperation and government schemes. This campaign will run till Ganga Dashami 16 June.

On World Environment Day, work of deepening and renovation of old ponds and other water structures started in every Gram Panchayat of the district including Baderabharas and Pawa under the “Jal Ganga Sanvardhan” campaign. The villagers are also coming forward to help in the renovation work of these structures being prepared to save rainwater. The work of reviving water structures of other areas including Prithvital Khurai and Sharda Vihar's Bawdi under Gwalior city started on World Environment Day. Collector Ruchika Chauhan directed to renovate MNREGA (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee) water structures older than five years as well as complete the incomplete structures during this campaign. She said that the works which cannot be taken up under MNREGA should be done under other heads such as 15th Finance Commission, State Finance Commission, Panchayat Fund and MP and MLA Fund etc.

In the “Jal Ganga Sanvardhan” special campaign, works of conservation and upgradation of water structures such as ponds, wells, stepwells and ponds etc. will be done with top priority. Efforts will be made to divert the water drains and sewers polluting the water structures and release their water into the water structures after purifying it. Under the campaign, water structures will be prepared in such a way that local people get employment. For this, efforts will be made to make the structures compatible with tourism, fisheries, water chestnut production and other economic activities. Geo tagging of the identified water structures will also be done through a mobile app. Fertile soil extracted from the water structures will be made available to the farmers. Buffer zones will be created as much as possible on the banks of the water structures. Strong arrangements will be made to protect this zone from encroachment. Along with this, tree plantation work will also be done on a large scale around the water structures.

In this special campaign, renovation, maintenance of ancient temples and archaeological heritages connected to major rivers and study and conservation of aquatic life, flora etc. will be done. Programmes of public interest like mass cleaning, decoration and folk cultural presentations/bhajans are also proposed at religious places, pilgrimage sites, fairs and archaeological heritages near rivers and water sources.

District level committee formed for implementation of the campaign

Collector Ruchika Chauhan has constituted a 10-member district level committee to run the “Jal Ganga Samvardhan” campaign smoothly and systematically. The Chief Executive Officer of the District Panchayat will play the role of coordinator in this committee constituted under the chairmanship of the collector. Executive Engineer Rural Mechanical Services, Public Health Engineering and Water Resources, Deputy Director Agriculture District Project Manager NRLM and SRLM, District Manager SBM, Project Officer MNREGA and District Project Officer WDC-PMKSY have been included as members in the committee. The co-committee will select water structures for renovation. It will also get the renovation work done with quality.
