The work on the Old Metro project has been expedited to make public transport in Gurugram more accessible and modern. Under this ambitious project, 5 new major ‘interchange stations’ will be built across the city, which will make it easier for passengers to transfer from one metro route to another. Apart from this, to maintain better traffic system in busy areas with limited space, ‘Double Decker Metro’ will be constructed at two main places, which will bring major improvement in the traffic system of the city.
GMRL Managing Director inspected the route, gave strict instructions
Dr. Chandrashekhar Khare, Managing Director, Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL) visited the proposed Old Metro Route and took stock of the ongoing initial construction work. During the inspection, he directed all concerned officials and construction agencies to complete the project work within the stipulated time frame. He clarified that the comfort and safety of passengers should be given top priority during the entire construction work.
At which 5 major places will new interchange stations be built?
According to the project report, new interchange stations will be built at the city’s busiest intersections and commercial centers like Millennium City Centre, Subhash Chowk, Hero Honda Chowk, Sector-5 and DLF Cyber City. With the construction of these stations, the entire metro network will be connected. Keeping in mind the new metro line to be built from Bhondsi to Gurugram Railway Station in the future, there are preparations to develop Subhash Chowk and Sector-5 as main interchange points.
Double decker metro will be built at two places, network will also be connected to Namo Bharat train
To deal with the shortage of land and heavy traffic, a double-decker metro will be built at Sector-21 on Old Delhi Road and Krishna Chowk on Palam Vihar Road. Under this system, normal trains will run on the road below, there will be a fly-over above it and a metro track will be built on the top level. Further strengthening the connectivity, Hero Honda Chowk and DLF Cyber City stations will also be connected by ‘NaMo Bharat’ (RRTS) trains, providing passengers direct and seamless travel to other cities.
Second phase planning and utility shifting work in progress
In the second phase of the Old Metro project, a new metro line will be constructed from Sector-7 to DLF Cyber City. Since many roads in this area are quite narrow, strict instructions have been given to shift electricity, water, sewer, gas pipelines and storm drains even before the construction work starts. Apart from this, final planning is being done in coordination with the concerned departments to remove the bottlenecks between Hero Honda Chowk to Umang Bhardwaj Chowk and to resolve the issues related to underpasses and high tension power towers near Millennium City Centre.
