Questions have once again been raised on the umpire's decision in the Indian Premier League (IPL) match. There was an uproar over the decision of wide in the match between Rajasthan Royals and Gujarat Titans in Jaipur on Wednesday. GT captain Shubman Gill also looked very disappointed with the umpire's decision.
Shubman Gill started arguing with the umpire
In the 17th over, when Mohit Sharma bowled the last ball, it went away from the batsman and the ground umpire gave it a wide. GT reviewed it. The third umpire did not declare it wide at first. Then after some time the decision was changed and wide was given. Shubman Gill got angry with this and started arguing with the umpire.
After this decision of the umpire, the fans are also confused. They seem to be divided into two groups. On one hand, some fans are saying that the umpire's decision was right, while on the other hand, some fans are calling it cheating on the part of GT. However, this is not the case.
What is the wide ball rule?
According to 22.1.2 of the MCC, cricket's law-making body, unless the ball is within the reach of the batsman, it will be declared wide with the bat with a normal cricket stroke. According to Rule 22.4.1, if the batsman brings the ball within enough reach to be hit by a normal cricket stroke, it will not be considered a wide. The umpire gave a wide to Mohit Sharma because Sanju Samson could not reach the ball. That means they were not in a position to play it. They were far away from this. In such a situation, he was declared wide.
