Gandhinagar: The Gujarat government is providing quality education to tribal students with the aim of making them doctors and engineers. Under the guidance of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and the leadership of Tribal Development Minister Dr. Kuberbhai Dindor, the State Tribal Development Department is running many innovative courses for higher education of students.
Gujarat State Tribal Education Society-GSTES has 26 EMRS, 9 GLRS and 9 Model Schools, a total of 44 schools functioning in the tribal area of Gujarat. These science stream schools provide free coaching for JEE and NEET entrance exams for admission to courses like medical and engineering with the help of a voluntary organisation.
NEET-National Entrance cum Eligibility Test is conducted at the national level after class 12 science for a doctor's degree from reputed medical colleges. Last year, 825 tribal students appeared for NEET in 2023 and 1,015 in 2024. Out of which 364 and 412 students have cleared NEET respectively.
As a result of the free coaching provided by the state government and the hard work of the tribal students, a student from EMRS Khodda-Tapi has got admission in the Civil Engineering branch at the prestigious IIT-Jodhpur in the academic year 2021. A student from EMRS Pardi has got admission in the Civil Engineering branch at IIT-Jodhpur in the year 2022.
Admission has been done in Materials Science at IIT-Gandhinagar. Apart from this, in the last academic year 2023, 26 tribal students have taken admission in MBBS, 94 students in BE/B.Tech and about 330 students in other para-medical-other professional courses, a total of more than 450 students have taken admission. The inspiration to start their bright career by taking admission in the field of higher education is the same.
While JEE Mains-Joint Entrance Examination is conducted at the national level for engineering degree from the prestigious engineering colleges of the country. Last year 116 tribal students from Gujarat appeared in JEE Mains 2023 and 136 students appeared in 2024, out of which 77 and 82 students have cleared JEE Mains respectively.
State Tribal Education Society (GSTES) has been established in the state with the great aim of bringing the level of education of tribal students at par with urban students so that they can compete in every field. This society has been established with the aim of making tribal students play an effective role in the social and economic development of the state and to extend its benefits to every citizen to increase the literacy rate.
A total of 105 schools are being managed by Gujarat State Tribal Education Society to provide high quality education to tribal children in the tribal areas of Gujarat state. Out of these 105 schools, 48 are Eklavya Model Residential Schools, 43 are Girls Literacy Residential Schools, 12 are Model Schools and 02 are Sainik Schools. These schools are functioning in 15 tribal districts Dang, Valsad, Navsari, Tapi, Surat, Narmada, Vadodara, Chhotaudepur, Panchmahal, Dahod, Sabarkantha, Banaskantha, Aravalli, Mahisagar and Gir Somnath.
