Athens, 11 November (HIST). Greece's Chalalampos Pitsolis has won the 41st Athens Marathon on Sunday. He completed the classic course from the city of Marathon to Athens in 2:18:56. The race is held in memory of the ancient soldier Pheidippides, who inspired the race.
Greece's Panagiotis Karaiskos and Georgios Menis finished second and third respectively, crossing the finish line at the Panathenaic Stadium in the center of Athens. The women's category was also dominated by Greek athletes, with Stamatia Noula winning in a time of 2:40:19.
Approximately 73,000 runners participated in the event, including 18,000 from 152 countries and territories around the world.
