Athens, April 27 (Hindustan Reporter) Greece officially handed over the Olympic torch to a delegation from the Paris 2024 Organizing Committee during a symbolic ceremony held at the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens on Friday. This is the same venue where the modern Olympics were first played in 1896.
The Summer Olympics will be held in Paris from July 26 to August 11 this year.
Tony Estanguet, President of the Paris 2024 Organizing Committee, receives the Olympic torch at the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens. With this the 11-day Olympic relay program in Greece ended. Now the Olympic torch will go to France, where the relay will be organized from May 8.
Meanwhile, Hellenic Olympic Committee President Spiros Kapralos gave a moving speech, in which he thanked his fellow citizens for the warm welcome of the torch during the national relay and sent his best wishes to France.
“In the packed Panathenaic Stadium, a unique journey of hope and pride, which has lit up the whole of Greece from one end to the other, has come to an end,” the Olympics' official website quoted Capralos as saying. “These 11 days that have enthralled our nation and captured the attention of the entire world are just the beginning of a great journey to the next Olympic Games in Paris in 2024.”
Afterwards, Tony Estanguet (FRA), President of the Paris 2024 Organizing Committee, gave a speech in which he thanked both the Greek people for organizing both the flame lighting and the handover ceremony, as well as Papadakis and Hayes, the French pioneers of the handover event Did..
He said, “Thank you to the Hellenic Olympic Committee and its President Spiros Kapralos for this wonderful start of the Olympic Torch Relay in Greece! During these eleven days across the country, we have already seen some very powerful images, and the passion that all Greeks have for the flame and now, what a proud and emotional moment it is to officially receive the Olympic flame at the handover ceremony!
“A big thank you also to our champions Gabriella Papadakis and Beatrice Hayes for being with us to play this powerful and symbolic role as heralds of the Paris 2024 torch relay,” he added.
After crossing the Mediterranean Sea, the Olympic flame will reach French soil in Marseille on May 8.
