Great jurist Fali Nariman breathed his last in Delhi

Delhi: The country's senior-most lawyer, an indomitable expert on law and the Constitution, the great senior advocate Fali S Nariman passed away on Wednesday morning in Delhi at the age of 95. The legal world of the country is in shock due to his demise. Declaring the completion of an era in post-independence Indian legal history, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, senior advocates, political leaders and other personalities from across the country paid tribute to him.

Senior Supreme Court lawyer Fali S. Nariman was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1991 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2007 for his services in the field of law. From 1999 to 2005, he was elected to the Rajya Sabha as a presidential nominee. He was the President of the Bar Association of India from 1991 to 2010. His children include daughter Anahita F Nariman and son and former Supreme Court judge Rohington F. Nariman is included. Sources said that he was suffering from several diseases at this time and died due to heart failure.

He has always been bestowed with epithets like the country's top intellectual, a patron of the Indian Judiciary, one of the last stalwarts of the Bar. He used to say that law is not only a matter of intellect but also of heart. You must have compassion. This is the best quality for a lawyer. Nariman, who made significant contributions to the formulation of constitutional law in India, was himself a vocal critic of the judiciary. He used to express his views openly on public platform whenever there was injustice anywhere. At one time he was a staunch critic of the collegium system of appointing judges, although he later said that this was probably the least bad option. Recently, when the Supreme Court upheld the removal of Article 370, criticizing the decision, he said that it was a matter of regret that not a single judge expressed disagreement. He was a staunch critic of the performance of governors, saying that the post was a relic of the colonial era. He was a strong supporter of preserving the core and fundamental values ​​of the Indian Constitution.

Born on 10 January 1929 in Rangoon, Fali Nariman started practicing as a lawyer in the Bombay High Court in November 1950. He was later transferred to Delhi as a Supreme Court lawyer. In 1972, he was appointed Solicitor General of India. However, he resigned from the post in 1975 in protest against the imposition of emergency by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. During a legal career spanning more than seven decades, he earned the respect of judges as well as senior advocates in the courts.

Paying tribute to her, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that Narima again dedicated her entire life to providing justice to the common man. Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud said that he was a stalwart in the field of law. He gave expression to a generation. He was always bold and outspoken in his written or oral expressions. It is indeed very sad that a great man of our times has passed away.

Senior Supreme Court lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi said that with the demise of Fali Nariman, an era has ended. He remained firm on his principles and never hesitated in calling wrong as wrong.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said that the intellectual world of the country has lost a great talent. He was an embodiment of righteousness. Today the justice system of the country has become intellectually dirty.
