According to the time calculation of Vedic calendar, an extremely rare and beneficial spiritual combination is taking place in the Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapada month of the year 2026. On Monday, 14 September 2026, the two most sacred festivals of Sanatan tradition, Hartalika Teej and Ganesh Chaturthi will be celebrated on the same day. On one hand, married women and unmarried girls will remain engrossed in the worship of Lord Shiva and Jagadamba Parvati for their unbroken good fortune, happy married life and getting a suitable groom, while on the other hand, the 10-day long festival of Ganeshotsav, the birth anniversary of Lord Ganesha, the giver of Riddhi-Siddhi, will also start from this auspicious date. This unexpected astronomical and calendar coincidence has created many important curiosities in the minds of seekers and devotees across the country as to whether different rules have to be followed for both the fasts, what are the different timings of worship and at what time the fast will be solemnized.
According to Hindu calendar, Tritiya Tithi of Bhadrapada Shukla Paksha will be effective from Brahmamuhurta till 7.06 am on 14th September 2026. Chaturthi Tithi will enter after 7.06 am in the morning, which will extend till the next day. According to the universally accepted principles of theology, it is always considered scriptural to observe the fast and worship of Hartalika Teej in the morning hours of Tritiya, whereas the appearance of Lord Ganesha took place in the mid-day period of the afternoon, hence Ganesh Chaturthi is established on the mid-day Vyappini Chaturthi date. Thus, due to this unique flow of dates, the festival period of Teej will be there at sunrise on 14th September and the auspicious yoga of Ganesh Sthapana will start at noon.
There is doubt in the minds of many devotees whether two separate fasts will have to be observed for Lord Shiva, Parvati and Lord Ganesha. According to the scriptures, the fast of Hartalika Teej is counted among the most rigorous penances of Sanatan Dharma, in which women perform Nirjala Sadhana by completely renouncing food and water for more than 24 hours. If a seeker is observing the Nirjala fast of Hartalika Teej, then the fast of Ganesh Chaturthi is automatically considered included in that rigorous penance. There is no physical or religious need for any separate fasting for this. After morning bath, sitting in the puja mandap, with water, Akshat and flowers in hand, this joint resolution can be taken: “O Devadhidev Mahadev, Mother Parvati and Vighnaharta Shri Ganesha, I am observing this joint fast for the happiness of both your divine forms, welfare of the family, relief from troubles and unbroken good fortune.” In this way, with a single waterless resolution, the full reward of both the fasts is achieved.
Very limited and auspicious time will be available to perform the main puja of Hartalika Teej on the morning of 14th September. Depending on the availability of Tritiya Tithi, the time of 1 hour and 1 minute from 6:05 am to 7:06 am is considered the best time for Teej worship. Fasting women should wake up in Brahmamuhurta and take bath in the water of holy rivers and wear new or clean traditional clothes. After this, purify the puja altar with Ganga water and make joint idols of Lord Shiva, Mother Parvati and Kartikeya-Ganesh with your own hands from wet black soil or pure river sand.
During the puja, offer the entire suhaag pitari (sindoor, bindi, bangles, mehendi, alta, chunri etc.) to Goddess Parvati and offer ashes, akshat, white sandalwood, dhatura, aak flowers and 21 shami and belpatra to Devadhidev Mahadev. After this, listen or read the holy fasting story of Hartalika Teej with a calm mind. At the conclusion of the Katha, perform Aarti and pray for the stability of married life, longevity of the husband and bright future of the children.
After peacefully completing the morning puja of Teej, the devotee and family members can start preparations to welcome Vighnaharta Ganpati Bappa in the afternoon. On September 14, the most auspicious and auspicious Choghadiya and Abhijit coincidence for the installation of the idol of Lord Ganesha and Shodashopachar worship will be from 11:52 am to 12:41 pm. During this holy period of 49 minutes, spread a red or yellow silk cloth and install a new clay idol of Lord Ganesha on a wooden platform in your Ishaan corner (north-east) or puja room.
While consecrating Bappa’s life, offer him 21 knots of Durva, red vermillion, Ashtagandha, perfume, sacred thread and red hibiscus flowers. Offer Naivedya (offering) of the most beloved Modak, Motichoor laddus and seasonal fruits to Lord Ganesha. After this, while chanting the mantra ‘Om Gan Ganpataye Namah’, recite the traditional story of Ganesh Chaturthi and perform a grand aarti of Bappa with the family.
The fasting tradition of Hartalika Teej does not end only with the morning puja, but its real spiritual essence lies in the sadhana of Pradosh Kaal (at the time of sunset) and the four hours of the night. On the evening of 14th September, the most auspicious time of Pradosh Kaal will be from 6.28 pm to 7.37 pm. During this time, the evening aarti of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati will be performed by lighting a ghee lamp again at the place of worship. In the religious scriptures, sleeping on the night of Hartalika Teej is prohibited. Fasting women should do Nisha Jagran throughout the night with bhajan, kirtan, chanting of Panchakshar mantra ‘Namah Shivay’ and religious dialogues. Night vigil helps in alleviating mental disorders and infusing spiritual power.
The most sensitive and scriptural rule of this great coincidence is that despite Tritiya Tithi ending at 7.06 am on 14th September, Hartalika Teej cannot be celebrated on the same day. The fast of Teej is bound by the dignity of Tri-Sprusha and Ahoratri (day and night). Therefore, this fast will be duly observed only after sunrise on the next day i.e. Tuesday, 15 September 2026.
On the morning of 15th September, after completing daily routine and bathing, the devotees should perform the last puja and aarti of Lord Shiva, Mother Parvati and Shri Ganesha before immersion. After this, apply the vermillion offered to Goddess Parvati on your forehead and gift the suhaag material to a worthy Brahmin or an elderly married woman. Thereafter, conclude the fast by taking prasad of pure water, Charanamrit and soaked gram or cucumber. With this one Paran, the religious completion of the fasting of both Hartalika Teej and Ganesh Chaturthi will be completed as per the scriptures.
