NSO Survey A survey by the Central Government's National Statistical Office (NSO) has revealed shocking figures on factory closures and unemployment. The NSO has released its annual survey of unorganized sector enterprises. According to this, between July-2015 to June-2016 and October-2022 to September-2023, 18 lakh factories in India have been closed. 54 lakh people working in these factories are losing their jobs.
18.80 lakh factories closed in eight years
According to media reports, between July-2015 and June-2016, 1.97 crore factories in the manufacturing sector were operational, out of which this number has come down to 178.2 lakh between October-2022 and September-2023. That is, 18.80 lakh factories have been closed in eight years.
More than 54 lakh people lost their jobs
It is true that when factories close, jobs are also lost. If we talk about the workforce working in these factories under the manufacturing sector, then in 2015-16, three crore six lakh four thousand people were working in them. Whereas in 2022-23, this number has come down to three crore six lakh. That is, a total of more than 54 lakh people have lost their jobs.
The total number of people working in the unorganized sector is 10.96 crore
It is worth noting that the total number of people working in the unorganized sector across the country is 10.96 crores. However, this number is much less than before the Covid pandemic. Chairman of the Standing Committee on Statistics Pranab Sen said that the unorganized sector has been badly affected by the economic blow. Recently, the unorganized sector has suffered a major setback due to some policy decisions and lockdown. Factories in such areas do not provide much employment.
