gadget news : The central government has once again backed down from taking the decision to ban foreign laptops. The central government has no plans to ban laptops imported from abroad or reduce the quantity of imports. The government believes that the production of laptops like smartphones in the country will gradually gain momentum and the demand for foreign laptops like smartphones will automatically reduce. There was a time when the demand for smartphones had increased, but the government did not impose any import ban on them and increased domestic production, after which there was a huge decline in the import of smartphones.

domestic production will increase

IT and Electronics Secretary S. Krishnan said that companies like HP and Dell will increase domestic production in the next financial year. Apart from this, the work of making components in the country will also speed up. The government is planning to invest more companies in the semiconductor sector in the country, so that semiconductor manufacturers can be encouraged. The government believes that $10 billion is a small budget for the semiconductor sector and because of this budget it is difficult to compete with countries like Japan, America, Europe and China.

Will get benefit of PLI scheme

He said it is difficult for India to compete with other countries, as these countries already have thriving semiconductor industries, while India has not yet set up operations. Laptop production is expected to start in the country from the new financial year. HP and Dell have announced to increase production under the Rs 17,000 crore Production-Linked Initiative plan, which was announced through 2023.

When was the ban on import of laptops imposed?

The central government first announced the ban on import of laptops on August 3, 2023, which was to come into effect from October 1, 2023.
