road accident: The central government is planning to take action against low quality bike helmets across the country. Poor quality helmets are a major cause of deaths and injuries in road accidents. This information has been given in the report of 'The Minute' quoting sources. The central government has also sent a letter to the states in this regard. In a letter to the states, the Union Consumer Affairs Ministry has directed the District Magistrates to take action against those selling helmets without ISI registration. The central government said in its letter, it has been observed that helmets are sold on the roadside without BIS certificate. This is a major cause of death in road accidents.
The letter said that immediate action should be taken against BIS helmet manufacturers and sellers violating the rules, without license and with fake ISI mark. All district magistrates have been directed to launch a campaign against those manufacturing and selling low-quality helmets privately. ISI mark is given to industrial products made in India. It indicates that a product conforms to Indian Standards developed by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
In India, the government has made it compulsory to wear helmets on two-wheelers. Two people are allowed to sit on a two-wheeler and both have to wear helmets. Not only this, helmets are also provided by vehicle companies on purchasing a bike.
