CNAP: The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) on Thursday directed telecom customers to start testing for Calling Name Presentation (CNAP) services. According to information sent to all telecom operators, the Department of Telecommunications has directed telecom companies to start trials for CNG, which will help telecom customers know who is calling, thereby making it easier for users to decide. It further said that customers with retail connections like banks will be allowed to have a common name for all connections, which can also be registered under the company name or trademark. For this, it will be mandatory for the user to provide all the necessary documents. Earlier, on February 23, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) had sent recommendations to the government to launch CNAP services for users.

TRAI, in its recommendations, said that indigenous third-party apps like Truecaller and Bharat Caller ID provide features for caller identification and spam detection, but their basis is crowd-sourced data, which may not be global. TRAI said that for this, telecom operators will have to create and maintain a database which contains the names of customers along with their phone numbers.
