Airfare: Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu, while answering a question on air fares in the Rajya Sabha recently, said that generally the government does not control air fares. When necessary, especially when the number of air passengers is high, the government intervenes in the matter of increasing fares, so that fares are not increased arbitrarily. Till now the rule is that airlines companies can increase or decrease fares up to 24 hours before the journey, but the ministry is now going to remove this rule. With its removal, if a ticket is purchased even a few hours before the journey, its price will remain the same as it was 24 hours before the time of journey. With the removal of this rule, irregularities in air fares will be eliminated.

Government’s eye on affordability factor

Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu said in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday that the ministry keeps an eye on ensuring that airfares do not go out of easy reach of passengers. Naidu told the House that air travel has become cheaper in 2024 compared to 2023 and air ticket prices have also become relatively lower during the festival season.

Airlines have the right to set fares

Let us tell you that the right to fix the price of air travel tickets has been given to the airlines so that they can fix the price of tickets according to their operational needs. For example, if there are fewer passengers on a route and operating costs are higher, airlines can save losses by increasing fares.

Flexi fare system is in place

Flexi fare system is also implemented in air travel, according to which airlines companies can increase the fares as per the demand. As the travel time approaches, fares keep increasing. The government has not imposed any limit, but airlines have been instructed not to increase ticket prices too much and the ministry also keeps an eye on this.
