Bhopal, 20 August (HS). The Gond tribe of Madhya Pradesh has now got a special recognition on the world stage for its unique painting system. Gond painting has been found to be successful in the set standards of protection of intellectual property. Due to this, Gond painting has got the Geographical Indication (GI) tag. This is a proof of the recognition received by the tribal painting of the state at the global level. Vanya Prakashan does the work of art literature compilation, publication and certification for the development, expansion and protection of art related works under the Tribal Affairs Department. A proposal was sent by Vanya for GI tag to get recognition for the specialty and art beauty of the Gond painting of the state. Gond painting has been awarded the GI tag for being an ancient art asset and meeting all the standards.

Giving information on Tuesday, Nitiraj Singh, the officer in charge of Vanya Publications, said that after getting the GI tag, Gond painting has now been patented as the heritage of the state. Now Gond painting cannot be used as commercial and publication material without permission. After getting the GI tag, Vanya will provide an e-commerce platform to Gond painters by creating a website to sell their paintings. In this website, Gond artists holding authorized letters of Vanya will upload their paintings. Buyers will choose their choice and place an order. This order will reach Vanya and Vanya will inform the concerned Gond artist to provide that painting through courier service. On receiving the information, the Gond artist will supply the painting to the buyer through the same courier service. The buyer will pay for the painting to Vanya and Vanya will transfer the amount to the account of the concerned Gond artist.

He informed that in order to link traditional tribal crafts with livelihood, Vanya is taking steps to get GI tag for seven other tribal art products. For the registration of these products, a proposal has been submitted along with the necessary fee to the Textile Committee, Mumbai, the authorized body of the Government of India. These tribal art products include Pithora painting (Bhil painting – Jhabua and Alirajpur), woodcraft mask (Baiga tribe), handicraft tribal doll (Jhabua and Alirajpur), musical instrument Bana (Pardhan tribe – Dindori), musical instrument Chikara (Betul), handicraft Bolni (Jhabua and Alirajpur) and handicraft potmala – Galshanmala (Jhabua and Alirajpur) were sent for GI tag. The government has taken special steps to establish both Gond painting and those who have mastered this art. An 'Art Centre' is being established in Patnagarh of Dindori district in memory of late Janagan Singh Shyam, a leading practitioner of Gond painting. Along with this, all the 'Gurukuls of traditional arts' of the state will be established in Khajuraho of Chhatarpur district.
