According to commodity and bullion market experts, the main reasons behind the decline in gold prices today are the following international and domestic factors:

  1. Profit Booking: After reaching near record levels in the past, big traders and institutional investors on the futures market (MCX) and international market (Comex) booked profits before the weekend.

  2. US Bond Yield and Dollar Index: A rise in US Treasury bond yields and a stable dollar led to a temporary pause in demand for non-interest bearing assets (such as gold).

  3. Stability in local demand: The pace of new purchases in the retail jewelery market has normalized after the first phase of the festive season, due to which local jewelers have also reduced premium rates.

Consumers must check the following parameters while shopping in the bullion market:

  • BIS 916 Hallmark: 22 carat gold jewelery must mandatorily bear the triangular mark of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and the number 916.

  • HUID (Hallmark Unique Identification): Every jewelery piece has a 6 digit alphanumeric code which can be scanned on the ‘BIS Care’ app to confirm the authenticity and registration of the jeweller.

  • Fixed bill instead of raw bill: Get a confirmed GST bill from the jeweller, clearly mentioning the weight of gold, carat purity, making charges and 3% GST separately.
