Supreme Court on UP bulldozer action: The Supreme Court today (6 November) has reprimanded the Uttar Pradesh government over the bulldozer action. In Maharajganj district of Uttar Pradesh, people's houses were demolished by running bulldozers for the road widening project. In this case, Manoj Tibarwal filed a writ petition on behalf of Akash, which was heard in the Supreme Court. The court has said, 'The person whose house was demolished should be given a compensation of Rs 25 lakh.'

CJI expressed displeasure

Expressing displeasure over the action of bulldozers, CJI DY Chandrachud said, Uttar Pradesh government said, 'There is encroachment of only 3.6 square meters. No proof of this has been provided by you. How can you start vandalizing someone's house without informing them? Breaking into someone's house is chaos. You should give compensation of Rs 25 lakh to the victims.

'Houses cannot be demolished overnight'

In 2019, the Supreme Court was hearing a case related to the demolition of houses for the road widening project. The court said, 'You cannot bring a bulldozer and demolish a house overnight. How can you enter someone's house without following the law or giving notice.

The Supreme Court also directed the state government to initiate criminal proceedings against those responsible. The court made it clear that the order will have to be implemented within a month. The court said, 'It is clear that the demolition was carried out without authority of law and arbitrarily.'

'Vengeance'

According to the petitioner, the house was demolished without any prior notice or explanation on the charges of encroachment on the highway. The petitioner claimed that the demolition of the house was in retaliation for media reports about alleged irregularities in the road construction project.
