Athens, July 10 (HS). Greek basketball player Giannis Antetokounmpo and race walker Antigoni Drisbioti have been named Greece's men's and women's flag bearers respectively for the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympic Games, the Hellenic Olympic Committee (HOC) announced on Tuesday. Both champions in their respective fields were selected by an absolute majority of voters of the Greek Olympic Committee.
Other candidates included tennis player Maria Sakkari, swimmer Evangelia Platanioti and water polo player Margarita Plevritou, according to local newspaper Ekathimerini.
Hellenic Olympic Committee president Spyros Capralos said after the vote: “I would like to congratulate both Antigoni and Giannis… I am sure they will take our country forward. I would also like to congratulate the three other champions who took part in the vote.”
The 29-year-old NBA star, who was born in Athens to Nigerian parents, and the 40-year-old race walker who represented Greece at Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020, will be the first two athletes greeted by the crowd during the Paris 2024 Opening Ceremony on 26 July.
Greece, the country that gave the world the gift of sports, always leads the team parade at the Olympic opening ceremony.
