‘Getting a chance because of captaincy’

Irfan Pathan Rohit Sharma And Vi

Indian team captain Rohit Sharma has been facing poor form in Test cricket for a long time, and his performance on the Australia tour has also not lived up to expectations. Meanwhile, former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan has made big comments about Rohit. He said that Rohit is being included in the playing-11 because of his captaincy, otherwise based on his current form he would not have got a chance to play.

Pathan said during a conversation on Star Sports, “For a player who has scored almost 20,000 runs, the way Rohit is struggling now, it seems that his form is not supporting him. What is happening currently is that he is the captain, so he is getting a chance to play. If he wasn’t the captain, he probably wouldn’t be playing right now.”

He further added, “You would have had an established team. KL Rahul would have been playing at the top, Yashasvi Jaiswal would have been playing and Shubman Gill would have been there.” Pathan also said that “If we talk about reality, considering the way he is struggling with the bat, he might not get a place in the playing-11. But since he is the captain and wants to level the series by winning the next match, he remains in the team.”

Rohit Sharma has been in bad form for some time now. This year, in the home Test series against Bangladesh, he scored only 42 runs in four innings, while he could add only 91 runs in three matches against New Zealand. Even in the Australia series, so far he has scored only 31 runs in five innings, out of which he has been out on single digit scores in four innings.

Pathan said, “His form is very bad. Even in India he was not scoring runs and his performance is still disappointing. When I see Rohit Sharma bat, it is a very disappointing sight.”

Apart from this, Pathan also questioned the condition of Virat Kohli and said why he is not able to repeat the work he is doing in practice in match conditions. He said, “This is neither the first nor the last shot by Virat Kohli. He is resisting the temptation to drive outside the off stump, and has been doing so for many years. Everyone is saying the same thing. Virat Kohli also knows this. We all talk about his discipline – why doesn’t he bring that discipline to the field?”
