Mumbai: As the Anda Cell of Taloja Central Jail is in need of repairs, the prison authorities have filed a plea in a special court stating that gangster Abu Salem, accused in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case, should not be shifted elsewhere, citing security reasons.
Salem's lawyers cited two incidents in which Salem was attacked and said his life was in danger.
The lawyers, while seeking interim relief for the gangsters, also claimed that there could be serious security lapses if Salem was shifted to another jail.
In the order, Special Judge Shelke directed the jail authorities not to transfer Salem. The judge said, keeping in mind the arguments made in the petition and the arguments of the lawyer, the Superintendent of Taloja Jail is directed not to transfer Salem from the jail. The court has fixed further hearing on June 19.
Salem and his former girlfriend actress Monica Bedi were arrested by Interpol from Lisbon on September 20, 2002 and handed over to the Indian agency on November 11, 2005. Salem has been in the Anda Cell of Taloja Central Jail since 2005.
