Varanasi, September 18 (HS). The surging waves of Ganga in the district are now receding after reaching the danger mark. The water level is decreasing at the rate of 0.5 cm per hour. According to the bulletin of the Central Water Commission, the water level of Ganga was recorded at 70.53 meters on Wednesday evening at 6 pm. The warning point of Ganga river in Varanasi is 70.26 meters, the danger point is 71.26 meters. The highest point is 73.90 meters. At present, Ganga is 27 cm above the warning point and 73 cm below the danger point.

Despite the gradual decrease in the waves of Ganga in Kashi, the difficulties of the people of the coastal region have not reduced. Thousands of houses in the localities and villages of the coastal area are surrounded by flood water. All 84 ghats of Varanasi are submerged. People have to resort to boats even in the streets for cremation at Mokshatirth Manikarnika Ghat. There is not enough space for cremation. The same is the condition of Harishchandra Ghat. Due to the rise in the water level of Ganga for the sixth consecutive time, boatmen are also facing the crisis of livelihood. To provide relief to the flood victims, the district administration has set up a total of 46 flood relief camps. Out of which 16 flood relief camps are functional. These include Primary School Salarpur, Primary School Saraiya, Primary School Dhelwari, Chitrakoot Convent School Nakkhighat, City Girls School, Badi Bazar, Deepti Convent School, Hukulganj, Navodaya Public School, Daniyalpur, Ram Janaki Temple, Dhelwari, Tulsi Niketan, Hukulganj, Navyug Vidya Mandir, Dhelwari, Primary School Rampur Dhaba, JP Mehta Inter College, Subhash Inter College, Konia, Saraswati Inter College, Hukulganj, Primary School, Domri, United Public School, Saraiya.

According to Additional District Magistrate Vandita Srivastava, 2860 people from 448 families are currently living in relief camps. More flood relief camps will be made functional as per their requirement. Clean fresh hot food, fruits, milk, drinking water along with all basic facilities have been provided to the people and families residing in these flood relief camps. A medical camp has been set up in the camp. In which the health of flood victims is being examined. So far 1093 packets of ORS and 7685 chlorine tablets have been distributed. About 523 people have been treated. The Municipal Corporation is getting fogging done in the camps. She said that a total of 7134 people are affected by the flood in Ganga and Varuna rivers. The district administration has deployed 25 boats for flood rescue. A team of NDRF and water police are also engaged in relief and rescue work with motor boats. The water level of both the rivers is being monitored, due to the increase in water level, the operation of boats has been banned in view of the safety of the general public. Straw has been arranged for the animals affected by the flood, so far 682 quintals of straw has been distributed. The flood control room is active 24 hours.
