Sprinkle rice on the idol before bringing it inside the house. Also keep some raw rice and a betel nut, turmeric, kumkum garland and dakshina before placing the idol of Lord Ganesha at its place.
This is how to install the idol of Lord Ganesha
Before installing the idol of Lord Ganesha in the house, bring materials like red flowers, durva, modak, coconut, red sandalwood, incense and agarbatti.
The worship of Lord Ganesha begins with lighting incense sticks and agarbatti placed in the aarti plate, then placing betel leaves and betel nuts on the ground in front of the sandalwood and chanting the mantra Om Gan Ganpatye Namah.
Now clean the place where you want to install the idol of Lord Ganesha and make a high platform or chowki. Chant mantras to invoke the Lord and spread a clean cloth and place the idol of Lord Ganesha on it.
After this, offer 21 Durva leaves, Modak and red flowers to Lord Ganesha, then apply red sandalwood tilak on the forehead of Lord Ganesha, offer a coconut, break it and then distribute it as prasad.
Also, don't forget to keep some fried grains for the rat which is the carrier of Ganapati Ji and thus install an idol of Ganapati Ji in your house and worship and perform aarti for 10 days with full heart and devotion. Do this every day in the morning and evening.
