Mumbai: Ganesh idols from Pen village in Raigad district, famous for being the Ganesh idol maker's village, have been given the GI (Geographical Indication) tag. This geographical designation has given the Pena idols a distinct identity.

Many families in Pen village have been making Ganpati idols for generations. The factories of this idol remain busy throughout the year. These idols are sent to Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai as well as all over Maharashtra. Now even Ganesh devotees living abroad order idols from Pen and install them during Ganeshotsav.

Due to the fame of Pena Ganpati, some tricksters used to steal any idol from customers by claiming that it is the idol of Pena. That is why the sculptor of GI. Tag was applied to the Central Government one and a half years ago. While accepting this application, the Geographical Indication Registry Department under the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry did not give GI tag.
