Dublin, 16 October. Gabby Lewis has been appointed as the new captain of the Ireland women's cricket team, replacing the most experienced player to date, Laura Delaney.

Delany has represented Ireland 207 times across all formats, and has also captained them for the last eight years. They were unable to make it to the Women's T20 World Cup, but have had recent success, drawing 1–1 in a bilateral match with Sri Lanka in August, when Lewis scored a century and was named Player of the Series. After this his team defeated Sri Lanka 2-1 in ODI.

Lewis, who is currently playing club cricket in Melbourne, said, “I know when I first came into the senior team, Dales was one of those teammates you looked up to. Since moving from the amateur to professional era, he has continually sought to develop and improve his game, and I look forward to playing with Dales on many more occasions as we move into the next stage of our team's development. Are.”

Lewis made her debut for Ireland when she was just 13 years old. She is their leading run-scorer with 3,742 runs at an average of 28.95, including two centuries and 21 half-centuries. The 23-year-old has also captained her country 12 times and will now take over full-time captaincy ahead of the tour of Bangladesh and India in November and January.

Lewis said, “I was honored to be asked to become the permanent captain of the Ireland women's team. I had a lot of fun acting in this role over the summer and I'm really excited about the young talent coming through the system. “Although we are a young team, results in recent years have shown that we can compete with the best.”

Ireland selector Ciara O'Brien confirmed that Delaney would continue to play for the team. Meanwhile, head coach Ed Joyce praised his contributions during his career that began in 2010.

Joyce said, “I have had the privilege of working closely with Laura over the past five years, and I have deep respect for the work she has done on and off the field. Not only has he led the team through the transition from the amateur to professional era, but the incredible support he has given the team during those COVID years goes largely unnoticed. Laura is one of the most competitive and focused players I have worked with, and I have enjoyed every minute.”

22-year-old Orla Prendergast has been made the vice-captain of the Ireland team. He made important contributions with both bat and ball, helping Ireland draw the T20I series against England in September.

Joyce said, “Orla also had the opportunity to lead the team this summer when Laura and Gabby were both injured, and we were very impressed with how she handled some high-pressure situations during the Sri Lanka series . We have tours of Bangladesh and India this winter, an Under-19 Women's T20 World Cup and an important year ahead in 2025. Not only will we have another busy domestic summer, but there will also be qualifying tournaments for both the 50-over World Cup in 2025 and the T20 World Cup in 2026. “Thus, we considered now to be the right time in the cycle to allow the new leadership team time to settle in and plan.”
