Dhaka, 12 October (HS). The Hindu community in Bangladesh is constantly the target of fundamentalists. The latest matter is regarding Durga Puja celebrations. More than a dozen cases were registered against such elements during Durga Puja celebrations and 17 people were arrested.
According to Dhaka Tribune, on Thursday, some fundamentalists forcibly climbed on the stage and started singing Islamic songs at a Durga Puja pandal in Chittagong, causing tension in the atmosphere. The video clip of the incident went viral on social media, leading to outrage. “A case has been registered in connection with the performance of the song at the Sharadiya Durga Puja event at JM Sen Hall, which led to religious crime and disturbance,” said ADC (PR) Qazi MD Tarek Aziz of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP).
Bangladesh Puja Udjapon Parishad President Basudev Dhar and General Secretary Santosh Sharma issued a statement saying that this unexpected incident has deeply shocked the people of the Hindu community. The council demanded a judicial inquiry into the incident and harsh punishment.
Hindus, who constitute about 8 percent of Bangladesh's population, have been increasingly targeted during the violence that followed the ouster of Sheikh Hasina on August 5. According to Inspector General of Police MD Moinul Islam, “35 untoward incidents have taken place during the ongoing Durga Puja celebrations across the country since October 1, due to which 11 cases have been registered and 17 people have been arrested.
Earlier, during the Durga Puja celebrations, the crown of Maa Kali was stolen from the Jeshoreshwari temple in Satikhira, Bangladesh. This crown was gifted to the temple by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Bangladesh in March 2021.
