Let us tell you that FTII student Chidanand S Naik's film Sunflowers Were the First Ones to Know beat 17 films for this award. These films were among the 18 films selected from a huge pool of 2,263 submissions from 555 film schools globally. Cannes will pay 15,000 euros for first prize, 11,250 euros for second and 7,500 euros for third.
The filmmaker produced the film after completing his one-year course at the television wing of the Film and Television Institute of India. It is a film inspired by a Kannada folk tale. It depicts the theft of a chicken by an old woman, which plunges her village into never-ending darkness. 'Sunflowers Were the First to Know' is a 16-minute short film.
