Cannes will pay 15,000 euros for first prize, 11,250 euros for second and 7,500 euros for third.
The filmmaker produced the film after completing his one-year course at the television wing of the Film and Television Institute of India. It is a film inspired by a Kannada folk tale. It depicts the theft of a chicken by an old woman, which plunges her village into never-ending darkness. 'Sunflowers Were the First to Know' is a 16-minute short film.
