From January to June, 1267 farmers committed suicide in Maharashtra, most in Amravati

During the six months from January to June this year, 1267 cases of farmer suicides have been reported in Maharashtra. The highest number of 557 farmers committed suicide in Amravati division of Vidarbha region.

According to the information given by the state government from January to June, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar is in second place with 430 deaths and Nashik division is in third place with 137 deaths. 130 farmers committed suicide in Nagpur division and 13 in Pune division. There is no report of farmer suicide in the Konkan region of Sagarkantha. According to NCRB, out of the total farmer suicide cases reported in the country in the year 2022, 37.6 percent cases were from Maharashtra. This year Maharashtra was at the forefront in the case of farmer suicides. According to NCRB, a total of 1,70,924 cases of suicide were reported in the country in 2022. Out of these, 11,290 incidents of suicide by farmers and agricultural laborers were reported. Farmers' suicide was recorded at 6.6 percent of the total suicides, in the year 2021, a total of 10 thousand 81 farmers and farm laborers are reported to have committed suicide in the country. Of these, 37.3 percent cases were reported in Maharashtra. In the year 2021, a total of 1,64,033 cases of suicide were reported across the country, out of which 6.6 percent cases were of farmer suicides. Whereas in the year 2020, 37.5 percent of farmer suicide cases were reported in Maharashtra. Incidentally, Maharashtra contributes the most to the country's GDP.
