Lok Sabha Elections 2024: The results of the Lok Sabha elections 2024 have surprised everyone. On one hand, while many veterans and popular veteran leaders have faced defeat in the elections, on the other hand, there are some candidates who contested the elections as independents and won with a majority.
Candidates who won as independents include Khalistan leader Amritpal Singh, Kashmir leader Engineer Rashid and Sarabjit Singh Khalsa, son of Indira Gandhi's assassin Beant Singh.
The number of independent MPs increased
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, four independent candidates reached the Parliament. Whereas in 2014, 3 independent candidates had won. This time at least six independent leaders have reached the Parliament.
1. Mohammed Hanifa: Independent candidate Mohammad Hanifa has defeated Congress candidate Shering Namgyal from Ladakh seat. Hanifa has won by 27862 votes.
2. Engineer Rashid: Independent candidate Engineer Abdul Rashid Sheikh from Baramulla seat has defeated former Jammu and Kashmir CM Omar Abdullah and Jammu and Kashmir People's Conference leader Sajjad Gani Lone. Abdul Rashid Sheikh defeated Omar Abdullah by a huge margin of 2 lakh votes.
3. Amritpal Singh: Amritpal Singh, the head of the Waris Punjab De organisation and a Khalistan leader, has won from Khadoor Sahib seat. Amritpal Singh is lodged in Dibrugarh jail in Assam. He defeated Congress' Kulbir Singh Zira by 1.97 lakh votes.
4. Umeshbhai Babubhai Patel: Independent candidate Umesh Babubhai Patel from Daman and Diu seat has defeated Lalubhai Babubhai Patel of BJP by 6225 votes. BJP has lost this seat after 15 years.
5. Vishal Prakashbabu Patil: Independent candidate Vishal (Dada) Prakashbabu Patil has defeated BJP's Sanjay Kaka Patil by more than 1 lakh votes in Maharashtra's Sangli Lok Sabha seat. Vishal Patil got more than 5.71 lakh votes.
6. Sarabjit Singh Khalsa: Independent candidate Sarabjit Singh Khalsa from Faridkot seat of Punjab has defeated Karamjit Singh Anmol of Aam Aadmi Party by more than 70 thousand votes. Sarabjit Singh Khalsa is the son of Beant Singh, the assassin of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
7. Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav: Pappu Yadav has won from Purnima seat of Bihar with a huge majority of 56.75 lakhs. Pappu Yadav defeated his opponent by 23847 votes. He has been an independent MP twice before. He won as an independent candidate in 1991 and 1999.
Most independents won in 1957
Any Indian citizen above the age of 25 years can contest Lok Sabha elections. In which the highest number of 42 independent candidates were elected in the 1957 Lok Sabha elections. Earlier, 37 independent candidates had won in the 1952 elections. There were 20 independent candidates in 1962, 35 in 1967, 14 in 1971 and 12 in 1989. Only one independent candidate was elected in the 1991 Lok Sabha elections.
