News India Live, Digital Desk: The story of the friendship between former US President (and newly elected President) Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi is famous all over the world. But Trump has recently shared an interesting example of how diplomacy works between friendships. The matter is related to India buying cheap oil from Russia, which had troubled the western countries.
What did Donald Trump say?
Trump recently admitted in a statement that when India was buying crude oil from Russia indiscriminately, he did not like it at all. He said in clear words, “PM Modi knew very well that I was not at all happy (about India buying oil from Russia).”
This statement is important because when America and Western countries were imposing sanctions on Russia due to the Russia-Ukraine war, India remained firm on its stand and continued buying cheap oil from Russia for the benefit of its people.
“Modi is very smart”
Trump may have expressed his unhappiness, but he also praised PM Modi’s diplomacy. Trump said that Modi is a very ‘sharp’ and ‘smart’ leader. He knew what America (especially Trump) wanted, but he did what was right for his country i.e. India. Trump acknowledged that Modi handled the issue very cleverly.
India’s stand has always been clear
Let us remind you that India has always said on the international stage that it will not compromise on its energy security. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has also said many times that “India buys as much oil in an entire month as Europe buys gas in an afternoon.” Now even Trump is praising India’s outspoken style and ‘India First’ policy in hushed tones.
What will happen next?
One thing is clear from Trump’s revelations that ‘give-and-take’ and ‘resentment’ will continue in the relations between India and America, but the needs of both the countries are related to each other. Trump’s belief that “Modi knew I was not happy, yet he thought of his country,” shows that he knows how to value a strong leader, even if the views are different.
