Free ration distribution starts before Diwali: Free wheat and rice will be available till November 30, know the new rules

In view of the holy festivals of Diwali and Chhath Puja, the Food and Logistics Department has implemented the official schedule of free food grain distribution for the month of November. To provide timely ration to eligible ration card holders under the National Food Security Act (NFSA) and Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, the distribution process at quota shops has been started from November 6, which will continue till November 30. Adequate stock has been delivered to ration shops to ensure that no family faces shortage of food grains during the festive season. The administration has clarified that without waiting for the last date, cardholders should go to their nearest government fair price shop in time and get their prescribed quota, so that the problem of server and crowd can be avoided in the last days.

As per the standards of the Food Department, the allocation of food grains has been decided on the basis of ration card category:

  • Antyodaya Ration Card (AAY): A total of 35 kg of free food grains is being provided per card on the Antyodaya card issued for extremely poor families. It consists of 14 kg wheat and 21 kg fortified rice (or in some districts the prescribed ratio is 21 kg wheat and 14 kg rice).

  • Eligible Household Ration Card (PHH): Cardholders in this category get 5 kg free ration per unit depending on the number of members (unit) registered in the family. Under this, 2 to 3 kg wheat and the remaining quantity of nutritious fortified rice is being distributed per unit. For example, if a family has 5 members registered in their card, they will get 25 kg of food grains completely free of cost.

For crowd control and smooth distribution, instructions have been given to operate government ration shops in two shifts daily:

  1. First Shift (Morning): From 8:00 am to 12:00 noon.

  2. Second Shift (Afternoon/Evening): From 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm.

Ration is being given in a transparent manner through e-PoS machines at shops only after Aadhaar based biometric verification (fingerprint or iris scan).

The Food and Public Distribution Department has issued strict instructions to all ration card holders that it is mandatory to complete e-KYC verification of every member registered in the family. This process is being carried out with the aim of removing fake units and ineligible beneficiaries from the list. Beneficiaries can get their verification done free of cost by putting their thumb impression on the Kotedar’s e-POS machine while taking ration. Those members whose Aadhaar verification is pending, their unit’s food grains will be stopped in future, hence get the e-KYC of all the family members completed in time.

The portability facility of ‘One Nation One Ration Card’ (ONORC) is active for migrant workers returning home on the occasion of festivals or working in other cities. Beneficiaries can visit their nearest ration shop in any part of the country or state and get their share of ration through Aadhaar authentication. If any quota holder under-weighs or refuses to give ration, the consumer can contact the state level toll-free helpline number of the Food Department. 1967 Or 1800-1800-150 But you can lodge your complaint immediately.
