The Indian-origin former financial manager of American football team Jacksonville Jaguars has been sentenced to more than six years in prison for stealing more than $2.2 million.
The U.S. Attorney's Office in Florida said in a statement that Amit Patel was charged before U.S. District Judge Henry L. Adams delivered the sentence.
The court has ordered confiscation of $2.2 million from the accused in the wire fraud case. The court also ordered Amit Patel to pay full compensation to the Jacksonville Jaguars and his former employer.
It is noteworthy that Amit Patel has confessed to his crime on 14 December 2023. According to court documents, Amit Patel had hatched a fraud scheme under which he defrauded a football team of $2.2 million.
Amit Patel used his role as administrator of the Team's Virtual Credit Card (VCC) program to make numerous purchases and transactions without any legitimate business purpose.
The court said that Amit Patel started the fraud from 2019 which continued till he was fired from the job in 2023.
The accused bought expensive watches, household items and many other items with the embezzled money. The accused did not mention these items in the tax returns.
