The International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Wednesday decided to award the 2030 Winter Olympic Games to the French Alps and the 2034 Winter Olympics to Salt Lake City in the US. France has been offered the hosting rights with certain conditions.
French President Emmanuel Macron has assured the IOC that the government formed after the conclusion of the Summer Olympic Games (Paris 2024) will fulfill all the conditions in terms of planning. The hosting documents are yet to be signed. After the formation of the new government in France, whoever becomes the Prime Minister will sign these conditions. The IOC has set a deadline of 1 October. IOC members accepted the assurance and voted in favor of handing over the hosting to France. 84 members voted in favor of France and four members voted against. Seven members did not participate in the voting.
France has previously hosted the Winter Olympic Games three times in 1924, 1968 and 1992. IOC members later approved Salt Lake City's bid to host the 2034 Winter Games. Salt Lake City will host the Games after a gap of 32 years. It previously hosted the Games in 2002. Salt Lake City's bidders included Utah Governor Spencer Cox, Mayor Erin Mendenhall and alpine ski legend Lindsey Vonn.
