Mumbai: Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) have been continuously selling in Indian markets since January and the selling continued in February 2024 as well. After a positive start in February, stocks have seen heavy selling this month following a net selloff in January due to weak global trends.

In February, total net buying by FPIs in debt, hybrid, debt-VRR and equity stood at Rs 19,608 crore, while there has been net selling of Rs 3776 crore in equities so far.
Foreign portfolio investors bought heavily in December after the US Federal Reserve hinted at an interest rate cut last year and the possibility of a rate cut in March 2024. At the same time, US bond yields fell and the flow of foreign funds into the markets of developing countries, including India, came to a halt.
According to NSDL data, in calendar year 2023, FPIs bought Rs 1.71 lakh crore in Indian equities and total debt, hybrid, debt-VRR and stocks bought Rs 2.37 lakh crore.
FPIs had made a net investment of Rs 68,663 crore in the Indian debt market in 2023. In November 2023, FPIs invested Rs 9001 crore in Indian stocks. Sales of more than Rs 39,000 crore were made in September and October together.
