Former Maldivian President Mohammed Nasheed has completely rejected the Washington Post report which claimed that Maldivian opposition leaders demanded $6 million from India to plot the impeachment against current President Mohammed Muizzu. Was done. Nasheed said that he was not aware of any such conspiracy and India would never support any such conspiracy.

Nasheed’s statement

“I have read the Washington Post report. I am not aware of any conspiracy against the President. India always supports the democracy of Maldives and its involvement in such a conspiracy cannot be imagined. India has never imposed its conditions on us.”

Washington Post claims

The report alleged that:

  • Maldivian opposition leaders planned to bribe 40 MPs to remove President Muizzu from office.
  • There were plans to involve the army, police officers and criminal gangs in this conspiracy.
  • To carry out the entire conspiracy, approximately $6 million (87 million Maldivian Rufiyaa) was required, which was to be sought from India.
  • The report also said that India’s intelligence agency RAW (R&AW) A U.S. official had “investigated” the possibility of this plan.

Indian government’s side

The Indian Foreign Ministry has not given any official statement in this matter. However, sources have completely rejected these claims.

  • Strong relations between India and Maldives: Prime Minister Narendra Modi had invited President Muizzu to the swearing-in ceremony. After this Muizzu made a state visit to India.
  • Muizzu’s statement: He had said during his visit to India that he would not harm India’s security interests.

Allegation of Indian names in conspiracy

The report claims the names of two Indian intermediaries to be involved in the conspiracy:

  1. Shirish Thoret – Former police officer and former advisor to Nasheed.
  2. savio rodrigues – Goa-based publisher and former spokesperson of BJP.

Refutation of Nasheed

Mohammad Nasheed rejected these allegations outright and said that efforts to weaken the relations between India and Maldives will fail. He said, “India has always supported the democracy of Maldives.”
