Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is retiring from Rajya Sabha today after 33 years. He was the first person to reach Rajya Sabha from Assam in 1991. He became Rajya Sabha MP from Rajasthan for the sixth and last time in 2019. Congress President Mallikarujan Kharge wrote a letter to Manmohan Singh on his retirement. In this he said that after your retirement an era has ended. Parliament will miss your knowledge and experience.
The tenure of a total of 54 Rajya Sabha MPs is ending in April. Of these, 49 MPs retired from the House on April. On the other hand, the tenure of 5 MPs like Manmohan Singh is ending today. These 54 MPs also include 9 Union Ministers. Former Congress President Sonia Gandhi will reach Rajya Sabha for the first time in place of Manmohan Singh. On 20 February, he was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha.
Kharge said in a letter to Manmohan Singh that you will no longer be active in politics but your voice will continue to be raised for the people. You have served for more than three decades. An era has come to an end after your retirement. Very few people have done as much for the country and its people as you have. You have shown that it is possible to pursue economic policies that benefit big business, young entrepreneurs, small businessmen, and the poor alike.
You will always remain a hero to the middle class and aspiring youth, a guru to industrialists and entrepreneurs and a mentor to all the poor who have come out of poverty thanks to your policies.
