Former Indian Army Chief General Sundararajan Padmanabhan died in Chennai. The Indian Navy has given this information. Before being appointed Army Chief, he was the GOC of the Southern Command. C. He retired on 31 December 2002. Born on 5 December 1940 in Trivandrum, Kerala, General Sundararajan Padmanabhan completed his education from Rashtriya Indian Military College (RIMS), Dehradun and National Defense Academy.

General Sundararajan Padmanabhan took over as the 20th Chief of Army Staff of the Indian Army on 30 September 2000. After graduating from the Indian Military Academy in 1959, he was commissioned into the Regiment of Artillery. He participated in several operations. He commanded an independent light battery from 1975 to July 1976.

Darajan Padmanabhan also commanded the Ghazala Mountain Regiment from 1977 to March 1980. He also served as Colonel General Staff of the Mountain Division from 1983 to May 1985. He spent two tenures at the IMA. He then also served as Chief of Staff of the 3rd Corps from 1992 to June 1993.

After promotion to the rank of Lieutenant General, Sundararajan Padmanabhan was the commander of the 15 Corps in the Kashmir Valley. During his tenure, the army achieved major success against terrorists in Kashmir. Before being appointed Army Chief, he was also the GOC of the Southern Command. He retired in the year 2002.
