Om Prakash Chautala passes away: Former Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala passed away this morning. He breathed his last at the age of 89. He has been the 7th Chief Minister of Haryana from the Indian National Lok Dal. He was the son of Chaudhary Devi Lal, the sixth Deputy Prime Minister of India. He was the President of the Indian National Lok Dal (INEL).
Caught in disproportionate assets case
On May 27, 2022, the CBI court sentenced Chautala to four years in jail in a 16-year-old disproportionate assets case. Apart from this, Delhi’s CBI court also imposed a fine of Rs 50 lakh on him. With this sentence, Chautala, one of the oldest prisoners above 80 years of age in Tihar Jail in 2022, became the oldest prisoner in Delhi’s Tihar Jail at the age of 87.
Name was also involved in a recruitment scam
In June 2008, OP Chautala and 53 others were charged in connection with the recruitment of 3,206 junior basic teachers in the state of Haryana during 1999–2000. In January 2013, a New Delhi court sentenced Chautala and his son Ajay Singh Chautala to ten years in prison under various provisions of the IPC and the Prevention of Corruption Act. Chautala was found guilty of illegal recruitment of over 3,000 unqualified teachers. His sentence was upheld by the Delhi High Court and the Supreme Court.
