The Hague, May 18 (HS). SC Heerenveen on Friday appointed former Dutch international Robin van Persie as its new head coach for the coming two seasons.
For 40-year-old Van Persie, this is his first job as a head coach in professional football. He has signed a two-year contract with Heerenveen, a club from the northern province of Friesland which is 10th in the Eredivisie, the top Dutch football league.
Van Persie, who replaced Kees van Wanderen as head coach at Heerenveen, retired as a football player at Feyenoord in 2019 and began his coaching career as an assistant and striker coach at Feyenoord. Currently he is the coach of Feyenoord U-18. He rejected an offer to become Feyenoord under-21 coach from the following season.
Van Persie started his playing career at Feyenoord and later played for Arsenal, Manchester United, Fenerbahce and Feyenoord again. He has scored 50 goals in 102 international matches for the Netherlands.
