Jammu, July 16 (HS). Jammu and Kashmir BJP spokesperson and former deputy mayor Purnima Sharma has supported the Constitution Hatya Diwas. She said that this day marks the anniversary of the Emergency imposed by the Congress government in 1975 which is a dark chapter in Indian history when democratic rights and civil liberties were violated. The decision to celebrate Constitution Hatya Diwas is an important step towards ensuring that the younger generation is aware of the grave injustice done to our democracy during the Emergency. It is a reminder of how the Congress party weakened the basic essence of our Constitution, violated fundamental rights and suppressed voices of dissent.

He said that the Emergency was a blatant assault on the democratic fabric of our nation and the Congress party bears full responsibility for this dark period in Indian history. Their authoritarian rule and disregard for democratic norms caused enormous suffering and set a dangerous precedent. Observing Samvidhan Hatya Diwas will serve as a stark reminder of the consequences of unchecked power and the importance of upholding democratic principles.

The senior BJP leader criticised the Congress party's continued attempts to rewrite history and downplay the gravity of the Emergency. “It is shameful that the Congress party often tries to justify the Emergency instead of apologising for its actions. This shows their lack of respect for democratic values and the Indian Constitution,” he said.
