Former Delhi Bar Council Chairman Rajiv Khosla acquitted in contempt case

New Delhi, 29 February (HS). Delhi High Court has acquitted former Delhi Bar Council Chairman Rajeev Khosla in the contempt case filed by former Delhi District Judge Sujata Kohli. The bench headed by Justice Suresh Kait gave this order.

The court said that the complainant did not provide any such facts which would show that a case of criminal contempt could be made out against the accused. Actually, complainant Sujata Kohli had filed a petition demanding a contempt of court case against Rajeev Khosla. Sujata Kohli had said that when the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate of Tis Hazari Court was conducting the proceedings of convicting, two District Judges were also present. On this, the High Court had expressed surprise and said that it is unusual that another judicial officer is also present during the judicial proceedings. After that the court had called for the report of the hybrid and video conferencing proceedings of the court of 27 November 2021 and 30 November 2021.

Sujata Kohli had accused Rajiv Khosla of directly interfering in the administration of justice and trying to defame the court. The petition said that several unfortunate incidents took place in Tis Hazari Court on 27 November 2021 and 30 November 2021. On 27 November 2021, when Sujata Kohli joined the hearing through video conferencing, she saw that the entire court room was packed. The lawyers were raising slogans in the court room and accusing the judge of convicting Rajeev Khosla under the pressure of the petitioner.

Let us inform that on November 30, 2021, Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Gajendra Nagar of Tis Hazari Court had ordered the release of Rajiv Khosla after imposing a compensation of forty thousand rupees. Khosla was convicted under sections 323 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code in October 2021. Female lawyer Sujati Kohli later became a judge and retired in 2020. Rajiv Khosla was accused that in July 1994, while being the secretary of Delhi Bar Association of Tis Hazari Court, he had asked Kohli to participate in a seminar.

According to the complaint, when Kohli denied this, Khosla threatened that all the facilities available at his bar would be stopped and he would also be removed from his seat. Kohli had also filed a civil petition for this. But Kohli's table and chair were removed from their place. The complaint said that when Kohli was sitting next to her earlier seat and waiting for the civil judge, 40-50 lawyers along with Rajeev Khosla reached there. There Rajiv Khosla pulled her by the hair and abused her while twisting her arms.
